Origins and Purpose
The International Residential EMF Safety Standard (IRESS) was developed on the basis of extensive real-world field measurement rather than theoretical assumptions alone.
Over more than a decade, certified EMF specialists and technical partners have conducted thousands of professional electromagnetic field assessments in residential properties, including private homes, apartments, multi-unit buildings, and long-term occupancy dwellings across diverse environments — ranging from low-density residential areas to properties located near power infrastructure, telecommunications equipment, and urban wireless networks.
This large-scale, field-based evidence base provided the foundation for the development of IRESS 2026.
1. Key Findings from Long-Term Residential EMF Assessments
The accumulated measurement data revealed a consistent and important pattern.
In the majority of residential properties, EMF exposure levels were well below internationally recognised regulatory limits, even in locations initially perceived by occupants as “high risk” due to proximity to antennas, power lines, or building electrical systems.

Existing EMF regulations are designed primarily to prevent acute biological harm and are not tailored to the conditions of continuous exposure in residential environments.
They do not account for:

While fully aligned with ICNIRP, WHO, and UK Health Security Agency exposure principles, IRESS introduces a residential-focused perspective that reflects how people actually live, sleep, and occupy their homes.
